MAINE MARCHES FOR PEACE

We got underway with a send-off rally at the Bangor Theological Seminary. From there, the Bangor-area contingent traveled 80 miles in three big buses and a dozen cars to join the big crowd behind the Buker School in Augusta. In a steady rain, the march and theater began. The creative energy could not be dampened by the rain.

The smirking chimp we have for a president better realize a lot of people want him voted out before he completely converts the last bit of goodwill America has in the world to fear and loathing.

I was overwhelmed by the size and power of this gathering! Illustrated here, the march stretches from the Capitol Building several blocks back on Capitol Street. The crowd completely filled the Capitol grounds between the Capitol Building and the State Library. A good estimate of the number of Maine people present and raising their voices for peace and just dealings by America with the rest of the world is 2,500—in solidarity with millions of others gathering at the same time throughout the world.

In the upcoming elections here in Maine, there would be nothing better than election of Chellie Pingree over Republican Senator Susan Collins. Collins voted in the U.S. Senate in favor of Bush's power to attack Iraq (and that will probably be followed by a lot of other places as "unilateral" precedents are set). The proposed aggression is naked. Collins should be removed from office in favor of Ms. Pingree.

The sudden, horrible and untimely death of Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone (a personal hero of mine) leaves a gap that can never be filled—unless we do what I know Paul would want us to do—redouble our efforts to reclaim the power Bush and company thinks it can wield in order to force falsely promoted "pre-emptive" war back into the hole where it belongs.
